Yup, since Jimmy Carter's creation of a federal, centralized, Dept of Education run by morons.

That was the Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) which was established in 1953. The creation of DOE was not a landmark event. It basically ripped the E out of HW and changed nothing , initially.

The United States Department of Education, also referred to as the ED for (the) Education Department, is a Cabinet-level department of the United States government. It began operating on May 4, 1980, having been created after the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare was split into the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services by the Department of Education Organization Act, which President Jimmy Carter signed into law on October 17, 1979.

What was special about the split off of Dept of Ed ?

I can answer that: Nothing. Ed was created as a PR move. Whatever is tormenting you now, tormented you well before 1980.

Budget didn't change at first. However has grown over the year, same as all Federal agencies.
