Our top political leaders do not think like us. They have powers and financing that we do not. Their objectives are not the same as ours. Their views are not the same as ours. The conditions that shape their decisions are not the conditions we face in our lives. Their interests are not our interests. Their values are not our values.
The result of these discrepancies is that they do not generally represent us. Much of what they decide to do appears to us as strange, irrational, and against our interests.
Here are a few recent examples.
15 of 19 hijackers on 9/11 are Saudis, so naturally George W. Bush attacks Afghanistan and Iraq.
Libyan leader Gaddafi fights al-Qaeda rebels, so naturally NATO and the U.S. attack Libya.
Libya is stable under Gaddafi, so naturally Hillary Clinton takes joy in wrecking the country and seeing him killed.
Saudi Arabia attacks Yemen with essential U.S. support, so naturally Trump blames Iran.
Mohammed bin Salman orders Kashoggi murdered in a Saudi embassy, so naturally Trump defends bin Salman.
Trump seeks peace in Korea, so naturally Bolton and Pompeo place sanctions on several North Koreans close to their leader Kim Jong Un.
Obama achieves a containment agreement with Iran, so naturally Trump withdraws from it.
Obama is against what he calls dumb wars, so naturally he involves the U.S. in war in Syria.
Obama is against what he calls dumb wars, so naturally he places American forces in many African countries.
Obama is against what he calls dumb wars, so naturally he joins Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen.
Crimeans vote to join Russia, so naturally Obama accuses Russia of invading Crimea.
Relations with Russia are peaceful for 25 years after the Cold War, so naturally Obama stirs up revolution in Ukraine and supports its government with aid.
The 1987 INF Treaty is a success, lowering intermediate and shorter-range missiles, so naturally Trump withdraws from it.
After the Cold War, NATO has no function, so naturally it goes into battle in Afghanistan.
The Cold War with Russia ends, so naturally Bill Clinton and NATO make war in the old Yugoslavia.
The Cold War with Russia ends, so naturally NATO expands into countries around Russia.
The Cold War with Russia ends, so naturally NATO threatens Russia militarily.
The Cold War with Russia ends, so naturally the US expands its missiles in Europe.
The Cold War with Russia ends, so naturally NATO more than ever views Russia as a threat.
The Cold War with Russia ends, so naturally George W. Bush withdraws from the ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missile) Treaty.
Not only do they not represent us, they cannot represent us. Government is not of the people, by the people and for the people. It is impossible that it ever be such for any extended length of time. Voting does not prevent government from degenerating, speaking from our perspective, as the American experience clearly shows.
