Are you ready for this week’s absurdity? Here’s our Friday roll-up of the most ridiculous stories from around the world that are threats to your liberty, your finances, and your prosperity.
![[Image: 51575102-absurdity-word-on-concrette-wall.jpg]](https://zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com/s3fs-public/inline-images/51575102-absurdity-word-on-concrette-wall.jpg)
Town charges woman $60,000 as a fee to renovate her own home
For 40 years Linda and Gary Cameron always dreamed of renovating their small home to accomodate more family and friends.
Sadly, this dream could only be realized when Gary passed away, and Linda received money from his life insurance.
But when the town of Richland in Washington state found out the renovation cost would exceed $50,000 they dropped the hammer.
![[Image: Linda-Cameron_WA_Street_Fees-1500x600.jpg]](https://zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com/s3fs-public/inline-images/Linda-Cameron_WA_Street_Fees-1500x600.jpg)
According to local ordinance in Richland, any home renovation that costs over $50,000 requires that the homeowner also renovate some town property.
I was shocked when I found this out and couldn’t believe it. Sure enough, it’s true. Chapter 12 of the City of Richland’s municipal code spells out “impact fees”, which are fees that the local government assesses on any building project that might have an impact on city infrastructure.
The municipal code goes on to explain that the city can essentially charge whatever they want. And they do.
In order to add a second bedroom and bathroom to her home, Linda was told she had to pay a $60,000 impact fee.
Pretty crazy. Now she has to sue the town government just to be able to make some minor renovations to her own property.

Microsoft says if even ONE person is offended, that’s “one too many”
We want to wish the best of luck to the second largest company on Earth as they embark on their mission to ensure they don’t offend a single person.
In mid-December, Microsoft developers added a tiny icon of a Santa hat in the bottom left corner of one of their programs (Visual Studio Code, also known as vscode).
![[Image: microsoft.png]](https://zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com/s3fs-public/inline-images/microsoft.png)
1 person… as in ONE… complained on the Microsoft’s Github page, posting, and I quote:
Quote:Microsoft’s “The Santa Hat on vscode insiders and pushing of religion is very offensive to me, additionally xmas has cost millions of Jews their lives over the centuries. . .”
This ONE complaint led the company to respond, “we’re sorry we hurt your and other’s feelings. We’ll remove the Santa Hat.”
Microsoft then switched the Santa hat icon with a more ‘culturally-neutral’ icon of a snowflake… perhaps to appease generation snowflake and its hypersensitivity.
The company then announced that “. . . the Santa hat was divisive and offensive to some of our users (even a single person being offended is one too many), meaning it represented the opposite of what we wanted to convey to our users.”
But was that the end of the controversy? Oh no.
Other users were offended that Microsoft would nix the Santa hat icon because a single person was offended.
“Well, that was unexpected,” Microsoft’s update on the incident begins.
And there-in lies the catch-22 encircling all modern “woke” companies. Being offended is America’s favorite pastime.

Pokemon breach Canadian military base
Canada had to assign soldiers to play Pokemon Go in order to keep a military base secure.
![[Image: 2020-01-10_10-19-05.jpg]](https://zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com/s3fs-public/inline-images/2020-01-10_10-19-05.jpg)
Pokemon Go is a smartphone game that uses augmented reality to place virtual Pokemon in the real world. The Pokemon show up on users’ camera screens when they aim their smartphone at the right spot.
Newly released documents detail how shortly after the game was released, a number of civilians were arrested after wandering into secure areas of a military base in search of virtual Pokemon.
The soldiers found that not only were Pokemon spawning on base, but that the base had also been infiltrated by a PokeGym.
It all kind of seems like a joke how clueless people can be.
But the game was actually designed by a mapping company owned by Google called Niantic. They collect detailed information on users’ location and behavior, and use it for marketing purposes.
If the point was to drive traffic to certain locations, it was clearly a success. They even breached a military base.

Vermont considers year in prison for anyone under 21 in possession of CELL PHONE
A Vermont state senator introduced a bill this week to ban the use of cell phones among anyone under 21.
![[Image: GettyImages-544834910-1.jpg]](https://zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com/s3fs-public/inline-images/GettyImages-544834910-1.jpg)
You read that right. And no, not just the use of cell phones while driving.
The proposal is to make it illegal, punishable by up to one year in prison, for people 20 and under to have or use a cell phone.
The bill has some great justification written right into it.
For instance:
Quote:“The Internet and social media, accessed primarily through cell phones, are used to radicalize and recruit terrorists, fascists, and other extremists… Cell phones have often been used by mass shooters of younger ages for research on previous shootings.”
The bill concludes that since the Vermont government has seen fit to ban under 21 use of cigarettes, alcohol, and firearms, this is the logical next step.

Perhaps entirely to be expected, the US administration has unambiguously rejected Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi's urgent call for Washington to enact a US troop 'withdrawal mechanism' in Iraq. In a Thursday phone call to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Iraqi leader urged the administration to “send delegates to Iraq to prepare a mechanism to carry out the parliament’s resolution regarding the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq.”
Echoing prior statements of Mark Esper, the State Department underscored Friday that it's "our right" as a "force for good" in the region to maintain "appropriate force posture in the Middle East" in a statement by spokesperson Morgan Ortagus. She stated the US considers that a troop pullout is not on the table for discussion with Baghdad officials.
"At this time, any delegation sent to Iraq would be dedicated to discussing how to best recommit to our strategic partnership — not to discuss troop withdrawal, but our right, appropriate force posture in the Middle East," Ortagus said. The words also appear aimed at Abdul-Mahdi's assertion that US forces were operating "without permission".
"America is a force for good in the Middle East," she added. "Our military presence in Iraq is to continue the fight against ISIS and as the Secretary has said, we are committed to protecting Americans, Iraqis, and our coalition partners."
And yet President Trump has previously declared the total demise of the Islamic State's "territorial caliphate" — which has long been the main rationale for the Pentagon being there.
What a bunch of BULLSHIT!
Let's see what Trump runs on now. No pull out of troops, no wall, just a bunch of fucking debt. And the Democrats are even worse.

In a federal lawsuit filed this week, Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosentein has been implicated in yet another improper government spy operation.
In the new complaint, Attkisson v. Rosenstein et.al., investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson names former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosentein and four other Justice Department officials as the government agents who of illegally survielled her electronic devices.
According to the complaint—filed in United States District Court in Baltimore, Maryland—Rosenstein led “a multi-agency task force in Baltimore that conducted surveillance of the Attkissons’ computer systems” and “used USPS IP addresses on other occasions to conduct operations.”
The complaint states that all of the defendants “were agents and/or employees of the United States Government working with Rosenstein” to conduct “the unlawful surveillance and hacking of the computer systems of the Plaintiffs.”
In June of 2017, Rosenstein signed off on the fourth and final application for the improper FISA warrant to spy on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. A month earlier, he offered to wear a wire to spy on President Trump when he visited the Oval Office, although he later claimed that he was just joking.
Attkisson took to Twitter Thursday to explain in a video update about her case that she had just filed a new lawsuit in her years long fight “to hold the government agents accountable for the intrusions into my computer.”
In a comprehensive summary of the case at sharylattkisson.com, the reporter alleges that the intrusions began in 2011 while she was reporting at CBS on the massive government gunwalking scandal “Fast and Furious.” The government continued to spy on her computers while she was reporting on the Benghazi scandal.
Quote:Multiple forensic exams show that numerous electronic devices used by Attkisson and her family during this time frame were hacked or remotely compromised. Unauthorized parties used government Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to access Attkisson’s computers; placed government surveillance spyware on her devices; and illegally accessed her professional and personal information over an extended period of time.
The summary states that in March of 2019, an appellate panel of three judges determined the former Attorney General Eric Holder had immunity from Attkisson’s claims.
Quote:Two of the three judges ruled Attkisson’s claims should be dismissed because she took too long, three years— and without success—to determine the names of the “John Doe” federal agents involved in the intrusions of her computers.
A third judge rightly dissented, understanding that Attkisson consistently attempted to identify the John Does but the Department of Justice continuously blocked discovery, filed protective orders and filed motions to dismiss in an attempt to obstruct. The government did not turn over a single piece of paper in response to more than a dozen subpoenas.
The dissenting judge called the government’s actions “Kafkaesque” for obstructing Attkisson and then blaming her for “taking too long.”
“We have just filed a new complaint which I hope satisfies one of the issues a judge had that we’ve not been able to name the actual names of the government agents involved in the intrusion,” Attkison announced in her video. “Of course we argued we could not name the names because the government and courts would not permit us discovery to learn the names!”
She added: “We did some additional detective work. We have five names to present to the court—names based on our information that were directly involved in the surveillance of my computers. One of them is Rod Rosenstein, then U.S. Attorney in Baltimore, a former Department of Justice official.”
Quote:"Fmr. govt. agent admits illegally spying on Attkisson, implicates Rosenstein & colleagues."
"Fmr. FBI Unit Chief confirms he initiated forensics that proved govt. computer intrusion."
