Time for some music

No need to put on your dancing shoes for this.

This is sort of a tribute by Rick Beato to guitarist Pat Martino who died a few days ago. While I was never a huge fan of Pat's you had to immensely appreciate and admire him. If you watch the video, I think you'll understand why. Pat was a huge influence on many, many, many guitarists and had a unique approach to his playing - it was spiritual I guess is how one would describe it.

No need to watch this if you don't like guitar or jazz, but Pat's life and what he accomplished is an amazing story.

The movie Beato references, "UNWOUND" can be seen on You Tube.

Been a while for a music post.
This one I'm excited about. I admit to being somewhat infatuated with this band, Lawrence.
I found them by accident and was hooked after watching a 2nd You Tube.

Wendy Moten

I'm not furnishing any links. The first time I heard her she was singing with the Time Jumpers in Nashville. At that time I had no idea that at one time she had had a record deal, had been a runner-up on The Voice, or had been a back up singer for Julio Iglesias for over a decade and more recently with Martina McBride. I guess at some point she was suppose to be the next Whitney Houston, also.

I fell in love with her soulful and emotional renditions of country songs, then her renditions of some Aretha tunes, but she is even more than that. Whatever your bag, check her out and I'm confident you'll be impressed and will remember her name.

"Ain't No Way"
This song has been playing in my head since last week. It came out of the blue and after a few days started driving me nuts. Naturally, it was Aretha's version playing in my brain, but I thought if I found some other version, maybe it would stop.

By gawd I found quite a few versions, a few were very, very good, but no white girls should even attempt this song.

One of the versions I found that was great was by the gal in the last post, Wendy Moten:

Also found this one by a woman I had never heard of before, Vanessa Haynes:

So, I'm thinking, Whitney Houston or Jennifer Hudson must have done this song so I checked it out. Turns out, both had, but not impressive enough to be included here.

Did you know, I didn't, that Aretha's sister wrote this song? Here they both are in the studio:

Two asides: The guy with the salt & pepper beard is Tom Dowd, he also produced one of my favorite albums, Derek and the Dominoes. The high soprano voice in the recording is Crissy Houston, Whitney Houston's aunt.

And this is what we all heard on our radios in 1968:

Here we go again, another song I grew up with and an album cut that must be 50 years old. This album cut was produced by the same guy that produced Aretha's "Ain't No Way", Tom Dowd. The first cut is from the original album

The drummer on the album is Jim Gordon who now resides in prison for killing his mother. The other guitar player is the late Duane Allman.

The next version is a live version. I believe the second guitar player is the guy from Dire Straits.

This is a live version with the piano player from the original recording on vocals. Bobby Whitlock's voice gives me a tickle down my spine. Sit back and savor in one of the greatest vocals you will ever hear.
