Unless the Chief is making a play for royalties or other financial considerations I think his beef is a little over the top. He admits that there is no bad intentions. I don't think Dodge is honoring or dishonoring anything, it's just a cool name. I don't recall Dodge ever really associating the name with native americans. But most importantly it's an established brand, the financial damages to the brand would be considerable and unnecessary. Discontinuing the name would not further the Cherokee Nation's fight for respect. There are real assholes out there with derogatory intentions towards Indians. One of those may be on the forum. Dodge is not one of them.

“I’m sure this comes from a place that is well-intended, but it does not honor us by having our name plastered on the side of a car," Chuck Hoskin, Jr., principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, told Car and Driver in a written statement responding to our request for comment on the issue. "The best way to honor us is to learn about our sovereign government, our role in this country, our history, culture, and language and have meaningful dialogue with federally recognized tribes on cultural appropriateness."

If anyone that owns a business or corporation looks into the history of indians they wouldn't want anything to do with anything related to them.
